Precious books

I have always loved reading and am now trying out this new site to post my reviews on!

The Egg

The Egg - Andy Weir I read this some time ago on Tumblr and I didn't know that it was an actual book, or anything more than a Tumblr post. I loved it though! It's amazing how Andy Weir manages to tell us a very powerful story in only four pages and I think a lot about this story.

Muirwood: The Lost Abbey Graphic Novel (Kindle Serial) (Legends of Muirwood)

Muirwood: The Lost Abbey Graphic Novel (Kindle Serial) (Legends of Muirwood) - Jeff Wheeler, Matthew Sturges, Dave Justus, Alex Sheikman, Lizzy John This was an okay read, I guess. I think I would actually have enjoyed it very much if I read, or even knew, more about the universe that it story is part of. Just this comic isn't enough to judge, though, so I'll leave it at three stars.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Mad About the Hatter

Mad About the Hatter - Dakota Chase This is a very enjoyable read for everyone that enjoys Wonderland. You don’t have to be a fan of the original work, for this book was written in a style much easier to read for young adults.

“Success is never as easy a road to travel as it looks, and rarely as sweet as one expects. In Ruin, however, one can usually find something worthwhile, be it a lesson or something more tangible.”

The story follows Henry, Alice’s brother, in his journey in Wonderland. He never believed his sister’s stories and thought her mad until he actually sees it with his own eyes. Basically thrown in with only one instruction: ask for the Mad Hatter, he goes on all kinds of adventures.
But things start to get complicated as Henry and the Mad Hatter start to get feelings for each other. Will they explore their feelings, or try and keep their heads on their bodies?

In my eyes, this is a fantasy adventure that would almost be like a ‘road trip in our world’-story. The pacing isn’t really fast, but they learn a lot about themselves along the way which made it an interesting read anyway. I feel like the writer used Wonderland to tackle actual problems like abuse, which I admire very much. The only negative thing about this book is that the feelings are a bit cheesy:

“the memory of their kiss filled his mind, along with the taste of Hatter on his tongue. Oh, that kiss, that miserable, awful, wonderfully astonishing kiss! Would it haunt him forever?”

But I know many young adults who don’t care about that. It’s probably just me and other than that, this was a great book!

Zonder genade

Zonder genade - Renate Dorrestein I did not enjoy this book at all and I was gonna give it 1 star, but then I saw a To Kill a Mockingbird reference and I had to give it 2 stars just for that.

Ms. Marvel Volume 1: No Normal

Ms. Marvel Volume 1: No Normal - G. Willow Wilson, Adrian Alphona This is one of my new favourite comics. I LOVE the idea of a Pakistani, muslim, geeky super heroine and the stereotypes it breaks. Of course, I loved the feminist vibe that I somehow felt throughout this comic (is it just me?). The art was amazing and I just really enjoyed reading this. However, I didn't give this five stars because I think that with the breaking of the heroine-stereotype, it created other stereotypes (for example her parents).

Elephants Can Remember

Elephants Can Remember - Agatha Christie 4,5*

I bought this book for only €1,- and since most reviews on here weren't too positive, I did not expect much from this story when I started reading it. That said, my low expectations weren't at all needed: I enjoyed this story MUCH more than I thought I would. I did not find this book cheesy at all (something I read in other reviews) and I liked the way Ms. Oliver played a very big part in this story. Overall, I would recommend this book to all Christie fans!

Lumberjanes, Volume 1

Lumberjanes, Volume 1 - Grace Ellis, Noelle Stevenson, Brooke Allen I really really really liked this story, but the artwork wasn't really my style. Still, I enjoy these comics very much and I can't wait to read the rest!

Orphan Black #5

Orphan Black #5 - John Fawcett, Jody Houser, Graeme Manson, Cat Staggs 4,5*
For me, this was the best Orphan Black comic yet. The background information was very interesting; I think we all want to know what made Rachel who she is today. I can't wait to learn more about the newly introduced clone, Veera, and I can't wait till November to read Orphan Black: Helsinki!

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch - Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman 4,5*
Amazing and a must read for everyone that enjoys funny fantasy. The only thing that wasn't perfect was that in my opinion, the POV changed a bit too much: sometimes it became a bit confusing. Other than that though, it was an awesome book!

The Island of Dr. Moreau

The Island of Dr. Moreau - H.G. Wells I read this because of Orphan Black and it was an okay read, except for some parts that made me cringe in a really bad way.

Tip of the Tongue

Tip of the Tongue - Patrick Ness It was good, but not really what I expected from Patrick Ness. I know my expectations were far too high, but I'm still a little disappointed.

The Spear of Destiny

The Spear of Destiny - Marcus Sedgwick 3,5*
I've never seen an episode with this Doctor, so I think I missed quite a few references. However, I still enjoyed this and it's about Norwegian gods so that's awesome.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams This book is probably not for everyone: it hasn't got any deep thoughts and doesn't give you more stuff to think about. Sounds like a book I wouldn't enjoy, but I actually did: I like the sense of humour and well, I never really say no to a cute alien story.

Doctor Who: A Big Hand For The Doctor: First Doctor - 50th Anniversary (Doctor Who Digital)

Doctor Who: A Big Hand For The Doctor: First Doctor - 50th Anniversary (Doctor Who Digital) - Eoin Colfer 3,5*
I have to admit that I've never seen a single episode with the First Doctor. However, that doesn't keep me from reading the novels and I actually liked this one more than I expected.

The Beast of Babylon

The Beast of Babylon - Charlie Higson This is the first one of the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary E-Shorts I've read, because the Ninth Doctor is awesome. The story was okay, nothing really special but still a good, quick read for Whovians.
