This is a very enjoyable read for everyone that enjoys Wonderland. You don’t have to be a fan of the original work, for this book was written in a style much easier to read for young adults.
“Success is never as easy a road to travel as it looks, and rarely as sweet as one expects. In Ruin, however, one can usually find something worthwhile, be it a lesson or something more tangible.”The story follows Henry, Alice’s brother, in his journey in Wonderland. He never believed his sister’s stories and thought her mad until he actually sees it with his own eyes. Basically thrown in with only one instruction: ask for the Mad Hatter, he goes on all kinds of adventures.
But things start to get complicated as Henry and the Mad Hatter start to get feelings for each other. Will they explore their feelings, or try and keep their heads on their bodies?
In my eyes, this is a fantasy adventure that would almost be like a ‘road trip in our world’-story. The pacing isn’t really fast, but they learn a lot about themselves along the way which made it an interesting read anyway. I feel like the writer used Wonderland to tackle actual problems like abuse, which I admire very much. The only negative thing about this book is that the feelings are a bit cheesy:
“the memory of their kiss filled his mind, along with the taste of Hatter on his tongue. Oh, that kiss, that miserable, awful, wonderfully astonishing kiss! Would it haunt him forever?”But I know many young adults who don’t care about that. It’s probably just me and other than that, this was a great book!
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
